What type of Euro do you drive?

Passat

Wait wait... did I miss something here? Which model? latest?

B5.5, B6 and audi B7

So you have all dem passats and was tryna discourage me from getting one? LOL.. you get trouble with ALL those models owa?

they all ok. a lot of random niggles, sometimes they a real hassle. I wont advise anyoen to buy a used VW or Audi unless the prepared to deal with the issues. Like hooking up with a chic who has a child.

I think the B5.5 has better handling

listen, German cars have grades... kinda like prestige schools here in t & T

VW's are like the St. Georges: they good, but quality could be better.
Audi is like a QRC
BMW's are like... Fatima

Mercedes is definitely Maple Leaf territory

Opel.. well, I dont know about opel. Maybe Gool can say since he still owns one

Eco tune, you are right on the money.

Next time i am buying a euro, first thing I doing is to carry a scan man to do a diagnostic. Dont buy unless you have that done.

Next is to carry it on a ramp and do an inspection. A quick way to tell if the front suspension bushes are good, is to open the drivers door, stand on the sill and rock up and down. do the same on the passenger side. If you hear any noises, well u know suspension needs attention.

Next, carry it for a full throttle run from a standstill, in D ( not tiptronic). It should rev out straight to redline smoothly and change gears smoothly. If it dont, u know u got some intake issues, or a possible transmission gremlin. beware

than look carefully at the dash, broken covers, exposed wires. look at the tips of the spark harness connectors to the coils. if they look frayed or hard, or break easily u know the car has done some miles

No. they decent. but they all have their flaws. Some of which you are FAR less likely to find in a Japanese car. Some of those flaws might be dealbreakers

But then consider what you getting when settling for a Japanese car.

In my experience, the Japs are good, but I would say no less prone to trouble themselves. Euro cars are full of more technology, hence more opportunity for things to go wrong. It's like why a bicycle would have less problems and easier to maintain than motorbike.

After going Euro, I can't see myself going back

Modern day Euros are less prone to electronic niggles like the past VAG models...namely Passat 5.5, Jetta, Octavia etc.

The reasoning is they have installed more electronic control modules controlling the smallest of comfort features, which actually minimize & isolate points of failures within the VAG electronic system, rather than having wiring short circuits and failures as seen in the earlier models....think of it as a Metropolitan Area Network in a PC system environment

Same time this doesn't suggest the electric system is more robust, but rather it is easier to troubleshoot using your basic VAG Com tool

You are right. Its not a case of a wire going bad in some of these mew euros, but sometimes small modules themselves go bad and can wreak havoc on you. Think of .. a broken door lock module OMG! I forget to tell Stefan H2 this. When a door lock module goes bad and your door stays locked wont open, you will cry. Its not an easy repair. And yes, door lock modules do go bad with no apparent reason or warning even on the latest VAG cars.

To me, any large Toyota (Hilux, Prado, Royal.. maybe even camry) and Ford Ranger have stepped things up. I would consider going Japanese if it involved one of those.
Subaru Legacy is a high quality car in my opinion, and Lexus is a decent one too. The new IS is a best ride and if your money tall and you can afford a GS, then you set. You ight find this strange, but the latest Tucson is a surprisingly good looking car (esp with sunroof) . Most wives will approve such a purchase.

I have no probs with Euro cars. I like BMW's Audis and Merc's, (esp if u can get a good foreign used) but one must be aware that depending on the stage in your life, you can be able to find far better ways to spend your time and money than running down expensive gremlins. That's the main advantage of japanese, esp toyotas these days. Genuine parts last and are easy to get.

B6:
this week I had my mech change the oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter... installed lowering springs, front and rear slotted rotors, new hawk brake pads, changed my driver's side door lock, new spark plugs and a new engine mount.

gonna put on my new wheels next week as well as the front lip... and maybe take off the bone type plates and put on white background pressed plates if I feel like it.

How do the HAWK brake pads perform when they cold and hot? I use Bosch or Textar, thought abt hawk tho.

Great writeup, but the door was managed to be open.

Problem is when the door is shut closed and wont open at all.

B6 Passat, oil and filter changed.
Replaced two front anti roll bar link rods. Front ride feels smoother.

Seems I'll have to change out coil packs too, misfire picked up on cylinder 4.

octavia. Changed out oil and filter today. Opted for the valvoline brand. While under there I realised the front pads are halfway out. Besides oem what brand you guys recommend and where to purchase. Also used an entire bottle of surf city garage dash away interior cleaner. That stuff is magnificent.

Closest for me ERM. Also will call Sterling and get some prices.
Bosch (OEM) on my Passat. I am sure ERM will have decent parts, but you already know this.

when they're cold you need to press a little harder on the brake pedal... but when they're hot, as soon as you touch the brake pedal you feel the brakes slowing down the vehicle, good stuff.

Seems to me it's the right thing to do.
Then again 10 thousandths of mm off don't matter in the roads we drive on, not even on the highway.
