I remember back in the 70s and early 80s the school grant was $75 for books.

Lots of kids used the money to buy Converse, which was $60.

I asked my parents for same but they got me a $18 Bata with the compass in the sole. The rest went towards books and uniforms.

That was my first lesson in financial money management

I remember the Common Entrance scholarship was $50.00 because I got one. It was given depending on your score after taking the exam. It was used to buy textbooks and some went in the bank.

well money is needed for shoes and uniform as well- but to avoid spending on unnecessary items just have an agreement with the bookstores and give them a voucher instead of money.

Yes and it's a brilliant strategy, negotiating is start high and eventually meet somewhere in the middle.

Negotiations 101.

there are creative ways of taking 4% and getting more through allowances.
Everyone focuses on the %, so they can actually negotiate some interesting deals in the middle

take it from me - "Allowances" are linked to the same % increases and are NOT general independent considerations while negotiating.

but i have said this over and over again, there should be less focus on percentage and more or non-cash benefits - vacation/casual/other leave, training "scholarships", increased insurance benefits, Public Service - Temporary loan of staff from one Commonwealth Country to a next etc etc etc.

I heard my sister saying Principals and VPs got the vehicle tax exemptions like travelling officers in the public service in lieu of salary increases. Not sure how true but she is a HS teacher.

Rejoice! You're probably saving money on one or both of those.

Nah I unaffected by either. Too poor for the PAYE and well I have only ever used a skybox once in the past ten years and that was in June of this year when I needed some light switches very quickly.

Hear hear. For the longest while my gripe with union representation is salary and salary increase. A look around my workplace showing that money is the least of people's concerns: who ketching they ass to get contracts renewed, who working month to month, people hadda compose tragic backstory to get their gratuity on time and yet the PSA only on we wuh we money now.

They even say if you seek their representation on a money matter they entitled to a percentage so despite the real grievances you have stacked high enough for god to stump he toe, you and the union showing up looking like a money grubbing troublemaker. I just want fair treatment and flexitime when the work from home era ends.

Beetham and Laventille flooded with money, all dem child moddas collecting for wigs & weave .

That appropriate use of the $1,000 school grant is a good point. It should never be 1. Do means test 2. Become eligible 3. Get grant because it will be used for everything else besides books

Hopefully it’s more of a credit system where you show your proof of eligibility, take your document to the bookstore and get items up to the value of the grant and let the bookstore recoup direct from the state

But then again I know my people, all it take is one bad actor working in the bookstore, giving back cash to the parent over the counter instead of books then doing the recouping with the state
