Kois and sustainable vegetation = the following
1. Water Hyacinth - + ve - the roots provide nutrients and they multiply really fast in the right conditions
+ve - have a pretty flower
-ve - They reproduce so fast that they may affect the nitrate and ph levels in your pond /vessel in the absence of strong filtration system .
Needs a weekly clean up of rotting leaves stems .
Readily available in our water ways but wash very well ,if taken from those areas .
2. Water Cabbage +ve again the roots koi love and they grow quickly
+ve low maintenance
-ve not very durable to the sun we are having of late
-ve don't grow fast enough for koi
3. Water Lilly +ve the prettiest flow in the TnT water plant world
+ve durable because it usually in a potted plant and some large enough stones would prevent the kois from accessing the roots
-ve Maybe the most expensive plant -ve maybe the least benificail to the biological system
4. Fox Tail +ve kois love this maybe a bit too much , it grows fast , not affected by sun .
-ve no flowers
5. Duck weed +ve a koi favorite , does not grow fast enough in my application
With koi I would recommend having the plants in two places . Koi eat well and would consume most vegetation in a vessel , so having the plats growing in a separate vessel or open filter would ensure that there is a "continuous" plat supply for your fish .
